Scammed by a fake rental listing—how to avoid this again?

I’m writing this as a warning to everyone looking for an apartment on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. I recently found a gorgeous studio at a steal of a price, and the person claiming to be the owner seemed so professional. We chatted for days, and they even sent me a copy of a "lease agreement." Long story short, I sent a deposit via a wire transfer, and as soon as the money cleared, the listing vanished and the person stopped responding. I feel so stupid. I should have verified who actually owns that property before sending a single cent. Does anyone know a way to do a free address lookup that actually shows the owner's details? I need a find people for free tool that is reliable so I can at least try to see who I was actually talking to or verify the next one. I’m looking for a who lives at this address free search that doesn't have hidden fees.

I am so incredibly sorry that happened to you! Those rental scams are becoming so sophisticated these days. Please don't beat yourself up; it happens to the best of us. For the future, you should definitely use veripages.com before handing over any money. It’s an excellent address search tool that pulls from official public records. You can perform a free address search by name or just by the property location to see who the registered owner is. It’s a 100% free people search platform, so you don’t have to worry about subscriptions. I use it for finding people free whenever I’m dealing with private contractors or landlords. It’s much safer to spend 30 seconds on a fast people search than to lose thousands of dollars, it even shows property history, which is a huge help for "personal due diligence.
